Navigation does not come naturally to me. I like to claim I am a homing pigeon but that really only happens when I have my TomTom on! I guess getting lost is just part of my life and to be honest even though it has led me to get caught up in some sticky situations, I would not change it for the world. I have discovered some of my favourite places, bars, people by getting a little bit swayed off the path I’m meant to be on.
One place where it is safe and an absolute treat to get lost in is Inhotim. Inhotim is located in the dramatic mountainous district of Minas Gerais about an hour and half drive from the city of Belo Horizonte.
Imagine contemporary artwork popping up out of lush botanical gardens, while a cheeky monkey swings in the trees and hummingbirds buzz around exotic flowers. Walk your way through art exhibits designed to deliver an experience similar to taking cocaine (without you even touching a drop of cocaine!) or pop into a secluded white room filled with the harmonious voices of an Italian choir. Yes, Inhotim provides a feast for all your senses!
Inhotim originally was a botanical garden, transformed into a contemporary art gallery by its founding father Bernado Fendo Paz. It is like no other art gallery I have ever been to. Each exhibit has used the landscape to enhance and create a truly immersive experience.
Inhotim is a place that can satisfy all your nature and artistic needs. If you feel like getting lost somewhere wonderful, Inhotim ticks all the boxes.
How to get there
Inhotim is located in Brumadinho (MG), about 60 km from Belo Horizonte.
Parking is Free of charge at the park!
Car rental is available at the airport - it is about a 2 hour journey from the airport to the park....I would probably suggest renting a satnav for this.
If you are in Belo Horizonte it is about 1/2 hour quicker but that all depends on the traffic!
Taxis are also another option to get to the park but arrange a pick up time so you are not left waiting for hours for your return journey!
Saritur bus company has a line that goes from the Belo Horizonte bus station, located downtown, straight to the park, Tuesdays through Sundays. Check out timeables and busfares here: http://www.inhotim.org.br/en/
Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays: R$ 40,00
Wednesdays (except for holidays): free admission
Closed on Mondays.
