Sustainable New Year Resolutions for 2020

How to start 2020 with your Sustainable New Year Resolutions

Sustainable New Years Resolutions for 2020

Starting your sustainable can be quite overwhelming at times. Extreme changes to our everyday life can seem like the only option to become sustainable, but this can be unstainable to manage. To help everyone out there on their sustainable journey, we decided to talk to Tallulah Hutson. Tallulah started her sustainable journey a few years ago as a student and has successfully been able to continue her personal sustainable journey. We thought she would be the perfect person to offer tips and advice on how to make small changes to make your Sustainable New Years Resolutions more achievable.

Wishing You a Sustainable 2020

by Tallulah Hutson (Guest writer and sustainable sister of From Belo)

December, and the decade, has come to a close. The New Year is a great time to try and put some sustainable habits into practice, although it can be hard to know where to start or how to sustain our resolutions themselves. Luckily, there’s plenty of help to be had.

Tips to be sustainable in your closet

Like the seatbelts we recycle to make our From Belo bags, there are lots of existing materials and clothes out there ready for reuse. If you want to reduce your environmental impact in 2020, trying to buy second hand is a great way to get going!

With the rise of apps like Depop, shopping for recycled clothes is now as easy as buying fast fashion has been.

Several sellers also use recyclable or sustainable packaging, which is always refreshing.

Sometimes it’s hard to find exactly what you need second-hand. Luckily, there are other useful apps such as Good On You, which provides summaries of various fashion companies environmental, labour and animal welfare work and policies. Tapping in a brands name is all it takes to find out if you’re happy shopping with that company.

Many larger brands like Adidas are also branching out to make clothes, gym kit and running shoes from recycled materials and plastic bottles too. Another company that does this is the body-positive brand Girlfriend Collective; so if you were hoping to try a new activity in 2020 you can do it in clothes that do the world good too.

Sustainable tips for in the kitchen

The extent of some supermarket packaging can feel crazy. But it can be hard to regularly shop plastic-free. One way to reduce the non-biodegradable waste coming out of our kitchens is to swap out cling-films and metal foils for more permanent products. Reusable bees wax-soaked cotton wraps from Pretty Bee Fresh are just one alternative from the many available a short internet search away.

Buying food in bigger bulk often involves less packaging as well – making cooking together or planning different things to do with the same ingredients within the week a great way to minimise what we throw away. If learning something new would be a fun resolution for you, it could help you discover plenty of recipes for this too!

A note from From Belo:

We are all on our journey to become more sustainable and would love to hear your tips. If you have any advice on how to become more sustainable and sustain it please feel free to comment at the bottom of the page and your tips may be featured to help others learn.

Wishing you all a happy and prosperous 2020!
